My personal favorite book on this stuff is Andrew Appel's Modern Compiler Implementation in (C|ML|Java). Are there other free C compilers? Modern Basic may be very different to what he used, but it's easy to see how techniques that apply a line oriented language might be extended to a larger unit of compilation.
